‘Where Neon Goes To Die’ marks the return of Magnus, a joint dance project by the flamboyant Tom Barman of dEUS and the iconic techno producer C.J. Bolland.
Although Magnus is just their side project, it still took the duo over ten years to produce some new material. It seems that almost every good band or artist needs a full decennium to reinvent themselves and create new music.
I am sure I can speak for all Magnus fans when I say that we have been waiting for too long. We have played ‘The Body Gave You Everything’ one too many times. At our summer barbecue, while driving through la douce France or simply while riding the bike to work. ‘The Body Gave You Everything’ was – and still is – an album that is good for any occasion.
Three weeks ago Magnus released the first single called ‘Singing Man’, featuring The Editors’ lead singer Thomas Smith. He is one of the many guest appearances on this album. The track has a certain eighties – new wave feel to it. Let’s hope for more of the same for the rest of the album, which will finally be released this September!
As the first of September is still far, far away, I selected four of my favourite tracks from their old album.
The second song on the list is ‘Summer’s here’, the soundtrack to Barman’s directing debut ‘Any Way The Wind Blows’. This song totally catches the vibe that is being created in his first movie. The list would not be complete without ‘French Movies’ and ‘Hunter/Collector’. Both highly entertaining tracks because of their wicked cool clips but especially because of their ingenious and addictive melody.
I’d like the end the playlist with one of the more guitar-driven songs on the album called ‘Jumpneedle’. For this track the duo worked together with another dEUS member, the talented guitarist Mauro Pawlowski who can also be seen in the corresponding clip (dancing in women’s lingerie!).
